Supercomputing is a dynamic and expanding field and con be considered strategic for Science and Engineering. In fact, supercomputing may increase productivity in scientific research and industrial design and manufacturing. The major industrialized countries are introducing supercomputing took and are supporting computational challenges-which will have significant effect on national leadership in science and technology. Some examples of these challenges are: computational fluid dynamics for the, design of aircraft or automobiles, calculations to improve the understading of the fundamental nature of matter, weather and climate forecasting, semiconductor and new material design, analysis, of large quantities of data produced by radio telescopes, nuclear fusion, automatic, speech understanding and computer vision, comparison of normal and pathological molecular sequences for understanding human genomes, etc.

What is the degree of supercomputing tool utilization in ltaly? What is the level of the supercomputing culture in our country? Is there a good balance among basic research in methods and algorithms exploitation of architectural benefits, software development, training activities, availability of efficient and economic networkig systems?

With the main intent to answer, to some of them questions, International Workshop on "Supercomputing Tools for Science and Engineering" was held in Pisa, Italy, from 4th to 7th December 1989 at the Palazzo dei Congressi. The main target of this Workshop, organized within the Parallel -Computing Support Initiative wich comes under the Italian National Research Coucil finalized Project informatic Systems and Porallel "Computing", was on exchange of technical-scientific experiences dealing with Parallel Computing and its applications.

The proceedings contain most of Ale papers presented at the meeting. In particular, the book contains topics of specific interest such as:

- parallel algorithms and their implementation

- study and evaluation of recent (vector / parallel) architectures

- software tools (compilers, parallezing tools, debuggers, etc.)

- experiences in the use of architectures for High Performances Computing. The book con be particularly Useful to researches and, in general, to those interested to know vive the State of the art and the employment of supercomputing tools in ltaly and which factors may increase their use to the advantage of the entire techhinical scientific community.
